The evil eye is to protect people from bad eyes. This is an evil eye in bird (crane) shape from 13th century (Seljuk period) which is the oldest evil eye pattern in Anatolia. This piece of underglass painting is hand made by Nurhayat Akol, in Ankara.

The underglass painting art is especially used intensively in the 18th century and later. The art of painting is made by painting the small details first, then primary colors. All patterns are covered with a background paint and become invisible. When the other side of the glass is turned, the pattern will appear in its vitality.
