Reverse Glass Painting – Sahmeran
The Shahmeran (the queen of snakes) is a legend found in both Arabic and Turkish literature. The legend is about the betrayal by mankind towards the shahmeran’s loyalty and good will. In Anatolia it is believed that owning a picture of the shahmeran will bring good luck and prosperity. This piece of underglass painting is hand made by Nurhayat Akol, in Ankara.

The underglass painting art is especially used intensively in the 18th century and later. The art of painting is made by painting the small details first, then primary colors. All patterns are covered with a background paint and become invisible. When the other side of the glass is turned, the pattern will appear in its vitality.
